The Birds of America Customer Reviews
:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Donna -- DO NOT BUY!!! It's not a good reproduction - at all. : I am returning and silently cursing all those who wrote glowing reviews for the hardcover. I like Audobon's paintings and bought it solely for that. I am an ameteur bird watcher. In other words, I just watch pretty birds and listen to their birdsong, the most beautiful music in the world. I am not one of those intellectual snobs that brag about knowing all the species, etc. I look, I like, I simply enjoy. This is how, in my opinion, birds should be enjoyed - naturally, not to show off your knowledge. That said because I like Audubon's paintings I jumped on this SOLELY FOR THEM. Silly me. i thought reproduction meant accurate, complete and color paintings woudl be in, you know, COLOR. Instead, it's an extremely bad photocopy albeit bound in a deceptive beautiful cover, black and white photocopy. It's not even legible in parts and the paintings I bought it for - other books are far more expensive - blurred, horrible black and white GARBAGE. I am returning it for a full refund. Shame on those of you who reviewed saying the pictures were good. Only one that said they were bad was a review for the paperback. You made me think the hardcover was better done and helped this publisher scam. Shame on them and also shame on you. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Damon D. Hickey -- The one Audubon to own! : When I was a kid in the 1950s, my grandmother bought me the one-volume Macmillan reprint of Audubon’s “Birds of America.” The color registration was terrible, but I was awestruck, and I’ve been in love with these paintings ever since. Audubon’s originals were huge, and there have been many scaled-down reprints. I have several favorite editions, but if I were going to recommend just one, it would be this one. The images are large enough to see detail. The colors are perfect and the registration is sharp. And all the birds are here, in the original order. So buy it, or get your grandmother to buy it for you! ( Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from wbj -- Great edition : Bought this for my 11 year old grandson who had just finished another book whose premise centered around a boy's and girl's attempt to restore an original library copy to it's original condition by locating pages that had been taken by various townspeople. He loved the book and he loves birds ( how many 11 year-olds know the name Agelaius phoeniceus). I'm hoping it will encourage his passion. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2015 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Angela Webber -- The book is beautiful. The foreword is concise and informative : The book is beautiful. The foreword is concise and informative. When I received it, the spine was already broken along the final index, but in a book of this size that's not entirely unexpected. Other than that, my only complaint is that despite it's assertion of accuracy in cataloging, the notorious Washington Sea Eagle is randomly in the front of the book, not listed in the index and mislabeled as plate 11 instead of 13. Over all, though it's an excellent collection of gorgeous art, faithfully reproduced, if not faithfully numbered. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2016 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Tom -- scam screwed book non-returnable : the kindle book is a crappy photocopy of a book,98% of the pictures are gone.... just plain blank... i tried to return the order w/o success ( Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from MissionHQ -- Huge book of Beauty : We use this book as a reference often. It is well made, big and heavy. Very happy with the prints included and the clarity of them. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from NOELVM -- Birds of America : I bought this for my daughter in law for Christmas. She is an artists who specializes in birds. She told me that it was her favorite book for doing research and that she often checked it out at the library but couldn't afford it. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2014 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from ian159 -- Amazing value. Wonderful reproduction - Needs a better index : Ok so the original of this is found in 120 or so sets of 'Double Elephant Folio Books' - I say 'books' but as they are about 4ft tall, by 3ft wide, and take two people to turn a page, 'books' is stretching the use of name. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from SophieB -- The most beautiful coffee table book : I have always been amazed by Audubon's work and as we were moving I really wanted something like this as a coffee table book. I was not sure what to expect for the price, as it's a 500 page book and I thought it was not expensive at all. My jaw dropped when I opened the package and saw the book. It's very high quality and bright coloured pictures on thick paper, the perfect and most stunning addition for our coffee table. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 29, 2019 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from john kennedy -- Beautiful illustrations in a weighty tome. : Excellent pictures and a much thicker book than I expected. This would have been perfect except that , unfortunately, the book’s dust cover was creased and it had a few slightly dog-eared pages near the beginning. I think this was due to only using one piece of screwed up paper to protect book which allowed a lot of room for movement. I couldn’t return it as it was a gift and I needto give it to recipient at weekend. Will have to apologise and hope she doesn’t mind. As someone else complained about packing, this needs to be addressed by Amazon. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Crocodilian -- Beautiful book : A beautiful book of the World-famous illustrations by Audubon. Thoroughly recommended. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2018 )
